CAMPER SAFETY

We understand why sending your child to overnight camp can feel scary. You may be asking, what is Dunes Bible Camp doing to protect campers from the risk of abuse at overnight camp?

We take this risk extremely seriously at Dunes, and here is what we are doing to address it:

What We do:

1. SCREENING: We thoroughly screen our staff and volunteers. Counselors and child-supervising volunteers go through a consistent, rigorous screening process. This process includes detailed applications, personal interviews, character reference checks, and criminal background checks.

2. TRAINING: We train our staff to know how to recognize and prevent abuse. This equips all of our staff to be an ally to the kids who come to camp, and helps us make sure nothing ever takes place at camp that would threaten a child’s safety.

3. MONITORING: We have policies and procedures in place during the camp week to ensure that every interaction between staff and campers, campers and other campers, and staff and other staff, is observable and above reproach. We strive to create a culture of clear communication between campers, staff, and directors.

Child Protection policies:

  1. THREE OR MORE: Staff are NEVER alone with a camper. Even when having a one-on-one conversation, staff and campers are in well-lit, public areas where they can easily be observed by others. Campers are never left alone together.

  2. PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES: Touch between staff and campers, and campers and other campers is appropriate and above reproach. Staff and campers are taught to know what constitutes appropriate physical touch.

  3. PERSONAL SPACE: Everyone has their own bunk - we stay off of each other’s. Everyone has their own seat - we do not sit on laps.

  4. WORDS: We do not participate in or tolerate rude or inappropriate comments or jokes.

  5. SAY SOMETHING: If you see or hear about anything that gives you cause for concern, tell a leader - right away.

Dunes Bible Camp considers protecting the children in our care to be a top priority that is in line with the core of our mission:

Creating opportunities for youth to:
Know Jesus → Love Jesus
Know Others → Love Others
1 John 4:19
